The Center of Disease Control (CDC) recommends getting vaccinated in September for seasonal flu for the 2009/2010 flu season.

A few things one can do to improve quality of life, longevity, and generally be healthier:

Make sure you and your children are up to date on your immunizations and vaccinations. This is the simplest way to prevent many illnesses.

Limit your sun exposure and use sunscreen.

Establish healthy eating and exercise habits.

Practice safe sex.

Do not start smoking. If it is too late, find the will to stop.

Have your cholesterol checked regularly beginning at age 30.

Begin colon cancer screening at age 50. Talk to your physician about available options.

Stay active both mentally and physically.

Men only:

Beginning at age 50, talk to your physician about prostate cancer screening.

Women only:

Have your well woman exam annually.

If you are of child bearing age, make sure you are taking a daily vitamin which contains folate (folic acid). Folate stores are important in preventing neural tube defects in the fetus. If you wait to start taking vitamins until you are pregnant, it could be too late.

Perform monthly breast self exams.

Begin screening mammograms at age 40.

If postmenopausal, talk to your physician about osteoporosis and consider calcium and vitamin D.

And finally, remember you are in control of your health.
